The Organic Trip and the Not-So-Healthy Pizza

6 Jan

My local grocery store now has an organic section! Praise (insert divine spirit that you worship here)! I have been waiting and waiting for months for this to finally happen and now it is! I’ve been drinking organic chocolate milk, eating organic hummus and applesauce, life is just one organic free for all. I warn you now, however, that buying all organic is very costly for some very odd reason, and I don’t recommend it if you’re on a tight budget.
Now, thanks to my tight budget, I have grabbed a 69 cent Tony’s frozen pizza. It’s cheese, do not worry my veggie friends. But cheese pizza can get SO boring, don’t you think? I do! That’s why I chopped up green olives and green peppers and topped them on the pizza before I put it into the oven! See – you can make things healthy without sacrificing the yummy factor.
Also – I had the BIGGEST temptation I think I’ve ever had this weekend, to eat meat. I went to Perkins, and was actually surprised that they really didn’t have any vegetarian meals, just side dishes. So I got two plates of fries, and paid a ridiculous amount for. I was going to say ‘screw it, i’m having a burger’, but I didn’t because each time I wanted to, I thought of you guys. So thanks for keeping me so strong, veggie friends!

I REPEAT: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. You may be asking yourself: oh, why? isn’t it vegetarian? Yes, it is (it’s not Vegan, though, so read the labels, people!). I am telling you to not buy this product because not only does it NOT tell you how to cook it, it also does not taste good and stinks up your house. I have bought the Boca kind and I’m hoping that those taste better and I’ll be able to give you a better review on that product.

Still trekking along – it’s actually very easy to be vegetarian, honestly. I think vegan’s are the one who have it hard!

Any questions? Feel free to ask! Otherwise have an amazing new year! ūüôā

I know what you’re thinking.

27 Dec

You’re thinking “Why the hell is she eating chicken nuggets?! Chicken nuggets are not vegetarian!” And you’d be right in that assumption, except I’m not eating chicken nuggets. No, I’m eating chik’n nuggets, by Morningstar. Fooled you all (well, at least I hope I did!). I saw these scrumptious puppies down in my organic and health food section. To me they taste just like the real thing, they smell a bit different – not in a bad way, just different – but who cares when they’re just as juicy and savory as the real deal?

I definitely give them a 4.5 out of 5 stars! They’re super easy to whip up – for eight of them it takes about two minutes in the microwave, and that’s nice if you’ve got a busy day, like I do.

Also I asked on Pretzelmaker’s (of PretzelTime depending on where you live) facebook if they had any options for vegan’s or vegetarians. They don’t for vegans, but for vegetarians they have ALL of their pretzels, except the hot dog pretzels. Pretty cool, huh? I think the best part of this ‘diet’ is seeing how much I was already eating like a vegetarian.

A Very Vegetarian Yule Day…

25 Dec

This morning I had the pleasure of getting yelled at by some family members about refusing to eat the beef broth based soup that we would be eating at lunch. I kindly reminded them that beef broth is still ethically the same thing as meat, therefore I would not be eating it. They told me I was dumb for starting this challenge so near Christmas, but I didn’t waver and I won’t. I told them I had to finish what I started and would NOT be taking any breaks. If anything, I can thank this challenge for giving me some sort of gumption to actually stick with something in my life.

Besides that point, I believe the things I will be able to eat that are ‘dans la menu’ are Macaroni Salad and dinner rolls. Which is just fine with me! I have some Morningstar Chik’n Nuggets in the freezer, so I can just eat some of those if I get hungry, and have a gay ol’ time. For breakfast I had a frozen pretzel by SuperPretzel. I do recommend them, but they are quite expensive, so I would search for a coupon online for them (I recommend couponmom!). ¬†The pretzels are vegetarian but NOT vegan.

Speaking of, apparently some of Morningstar’s products use eggs and are actually vegetarian instead of vegan…? This is what I was told by my best friend, which I find kind of ironic…but hey it’s Morningstar’s loss.

Happy Yule Day!

Product Review: Silk Almond Milk

23 Dec

Alright, so I’m just going to say it: ¬†the best thing about Silk Almond Milk is the fact that it’s not soy milk. Yeah, I know, vegetarians hate me for the rest of my life, I don’t care. I’m still sticking by that statement. If you don’t like soy milk, almond milk by Silk is the one for you! I used it today for the first time, in my cereal, and it’s delicious! Don’t be shocked about it’s thickness when it comes out of the container, it scared me at first but it’s not that thick once it sits for a second. Also, don’t be surprised by a nutty undertone in your cereal. I eat Shredded Wheat so I thought it fit quite well with the cereal. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend cooking savory food with it – I haven’t tried it, but to me it’s a bit too sweet for that. I also would have to say watch your portions with this one, because the normal amount of cow milk that I would’ve used was nowhere near as much as I ate with the almond milk. It’s too sweet to have a huge bowl, so I actually felt fuller quicker.

I’m starting to think PETA has this whole ‘vegetarian diet: way to lose weight’ thing down!

Day One: Easier than I thought

22 Dec

Today, after deciding to tweak PETA’s ’30 day Vegan Challenge’ into a 30 day vegetarian challenge – I was at a standstill at my local¬†grocery¬†store. I could either spend the five dollars on the faux ‘beef crumbles’ ¬†or just going meatless for the week. I decided to splurge on the pound of ‘meat’ and made stuffed peppers. Completely VEGAN too, let alone vegetarian. I made them for my Christmas dinner with my best friend and my girlfriend. They were absolutely delicious! You couldn’t tell it wasn’t real meat at all.

I then went to the health food section of my grocery store and realized how much stuff I could actually buy! It was nice to see the gluten free food as well as dairy free food. I’ve got my eye on a rice MACARONI AND CHEEZE frozen dinner. I’m not sure what they use for the cheese but my goodness it looked delish!

Also, I’m starting to send out emails to food chains to see what I can order that’s vegan and vegetarian at their¬†restaurants, so I can eat out. Would you guys be interested in that at all? Let me know!

If anyone wants the recipe for this rice and ‘hamburger’ stuffed pepper, just let me know! ūüôā
